Home Theater Audio Setup

The home theater audio setup will depend on the space of room, number of speakers, and what kind of signal your receiver can carry. It does not matter if you have a simple stereo audio setup or a complex multi-speaker setup. Proper home theater audio setup will give the most enjoyable theatrical experience.

The first step to proper home theater audio setup is to have a tile, wood, or any other non-carpeted floors, to put down an area rug. Hard floors may look nice but they affect acoustics poorly.

The second step in home theater audio setup is the speaker placement. For a stereo speaker, placement is simple – one on either side of the display area. For a 5.1 surround sound speakers, your center channel speaker should either above or below your screen. Left and right front speakers should be on either side of the screen, probably about a 45 degree angle from the center of the viewing position. However if the setup is for more than one person, then all three front speakers should be placed in a straight line.

Two rear speakers or surround speakers should be placed on either side of the seating – the same distance from the viewing area. If possible have them placed a few feet above head level while sitting. If the rear speakers must be placed behind the seating, experiment with pointing the speakers at an angle so that the sound coming from them seems to ‘surround’ the viewer. If you have a subwoofer, place it wherever is most convenient, because the placement is not critical to sound reproduction.

If you are using 5.1 Surround speakers, it is necessary to configure your receiver. Unless you have tower speakers, all main speakers should be set to ‘small’. Low-frequency effects and bass should be set to subwoofer if you have one. DSP modes should be turned off. Read the manual to find out how to change these settings and to check any specific requirements your receiver might have.

With proper home theater audio setup, you can have a truly cinematic experience right in your living room.
